I love January for its' feeling of new beginnings. It is a time to take stock of how we live our lives and tweak things a bit here or there. For some it is a time to clean, organize, and purge. Others find the starkness of winter a time to reconnect to nature; preparing the gardens for spring, walking amongst the naked trees, or spending time at the beach with the pounding surf. Still others like to hibernate; embracing the short days as opportunities for extra time reading, sleeping, and being quiet. January is like a "do over" but with one more year of experience under our belts. The unseasonably warm weather is lovely but no doubt winter weather will be just around the corner. With that in mind, I have included an article on skiing as well as a You Tube video to wet your appetite. If you are not a skier, this article has important information on the benefits of pilates for all sports and activities. Enjoy! Lastly, I would like to let you know that I will be raising my prices on February 1st. My last price increase was more than 4 years ago. Please see the new prices below. I'm looking forward to helping you meet your goals and championing you as we ease in to 2012. Warmly, Michele |

Pilates Principle #1: Centering
All movement initiates from the center of the body and flows outward. Our center is our "core". It is comprised primarily of the muscles of the pelvic floor, deep abdominals, and deep back muscles. By connecting to and strengthening these muscles we are better able to create safer, more efficient movement patterns, experience less fatigue, and find relief from back pain.

Pilates and Skiing
| |
The exhilaration of soaring down a mountainside over a blanket of sparkling white snow, surrounded by pristine evergreens and an endless blue sky inspires millions of people to ski every year. It's not small reward for countless hours spent in the car, in lift lines, and on bristling cold lift rides to the top of the mountain.
If you made a snow ball and let it roll down the side of a mountain, the path it rolls down is called the "fall line". To ski the "fall line" with finesse and control requires flowing motion, rhythm, and precision. A strong core, muscle balance, and flexibility are essential.
Pilates helps a skier to organize his or her movement from the center out. The result is a stronger and more adaptable skier with improved body awareness and proprioception. By practicing Pilates, a client develops a strong core, improved balance, and agility. With the additional core strength, the skier can improve his or her edging and transfer a powerful line of energy into the skis. A strong core, coupled with improved alignment, will also reduce impact on a skier's back, hips, and knees. As a result, a skier becomes energy efficient and reduces wear and tear on his or her joints. Once this has happened the possibilities to become an infinitely stronger and skilled skier are endless.

"There is a privacy about it which no other season gives
you...In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an
open season on each other; only in winter, in the country,
can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself."
~ Ruth Stout
